Bhringaraj, known in the west as Eclipta alba or False daisy, is a tropÂiÂcal plant
heavÂily used in both Indian Ayurvedic medÂiÂcine and traÂdiÂtional ChiÂnese medÂiÂcine. Its use in treatÂing hair loss conÂdiÂtions has aroused WestÂern interÂest in recent years and some promisÂing clinÂiÂcal triÂals have revealed it to be a seriÂous option for those lookÂing to treat hair loss.
Eclipta alba – what is it?
A small herb endemic to Asia and SouthÂwestÂern AmerÂica. It is a tropÂiÂcal plant that grows in areas of high moisÂture, grows to a height of 3 inches and has lance-shaped leaves.
TraÂdiÂtional uses
In India Bhringaraj oil (Eclipta alba) has traÂdiÂtionÂally be used to treat hair loss, but it is also used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial action, as well as a liver and blood cleanser. It’s attribÂuted many health propÂerÂties, includÂing the abilÂity to preÂvent cerÂtain types of canÂcer and cirÂrhoÂsis of the liver.
The oil derived from the plant is said to have varÂiÂous anti-aging propÂerÂties inside and out. Apart from treatÂing the visÂiÂble effects of aging, it’s also said to increase energy levÂels and treat fatigure.
Eclipta alba for hair loss
Used topÂiÂcally, eclipta alba has been shown to increase the rate of hair growth in rodents faster and betÂter than a 2% conÂcenÂtraÂtion of minoxÂiÂdil. SigÂnifÂiÂcant
results were meaÂsured in two sepÂaÂrate clinÂiÂcal triÂals. The best results were achieved using a petroÂleum ether extract of the plant but a methanol extracÂtion method was also effecÂtive. These tests do seem to supÂport the traÂdiÂtional use of Eclipta alba / Bhringaraj as a hair loss tonic. The results were impresÂsive – the methanol extracted Eclipta alba increased the hair count from 19 to 66, while the minoxÂiÂdil 2% conÂcenÂtraÂtion increased it from 43 to 73. The extract seemed to affect hair folÂliÂcles that were in the telÂoÂgen (dorÂmant) phase and stimÂuÂlate them to reenÂter the anaÂgen phase – proÂducÂing new hairs.
FurÂther tests need to be conÂducted to deterÂmine why some methÂods of extracÂtions work betÂter than othÂers, but for now, Eclipta alba is a perÂfectly safe hair loss treatÂment you can use at home.
To use Bhringaraj topÂiÂcally at home:
Mix Bhringaraj powÂder with oil (coconut or sesame oil are best), genÂtly warm it withÂout boilÂing to release the herb’s propÂerÂties into the oil, cool down and botÂtle. Apply topÂiÂcally to the scalp while genÂtly masÂsagÂing it in.
You can also mix the dried powÂder with some ground up green gram (mung bean), mix with water or milk and apply to the hair. Leave it on for 10 minÂutes before washÂing off. Repeat once every three days.
